Arcanum was game of the year in ...2001? I dunno, it was early. PC game that used the Baldurs Gate engine. For me, there has been no better game in the steampunk genre...you could build your character as a technologist or someone who uses magic. I would LOVE to see a Skyrim style successor to it. (Since Baldurs Gate style games don't really work on console and nobody is making them anymore anyways) Masters of Orion is a turn based strategy game along the lines of Civilization. Explore, expand, conquer. Two things about this game (from the 90's, PC game) really make me feel it needs a successor with today's PCs: 1 - the customization!! You could build your own species to play as. Want to never require food ? Eat rocks and minerals!! Want to be telepathic? Great diplomats? Have a paradise home world? Great at espionage? All of these were possible. Not only could you customize your race, you could build your own ships!! Bombs, missiles, lasers, Death Star planet busting rays....yep!!! 2 - the tactical combat system yeah, it was glitchy and imbalanced, and 2d. This game ran on DOS though, what do you expect? It was awesome maneuvering your armada in position for the kill. It was an incredibly deep game, and if it were given proper multiplayer support , upgrades to AI , and attention to balance, it could really be stunning for those of us who like turn based strategy games.
