I will suggest an alternate hypothesis - hunters suit the play style of the best players. Both bladedancer and gunslinger have very high agility by default, and can reach higher maximum agility than any other class. Also gunslingers have a couple of useful weapon-based perks on their class list. If you are a top-tier twitch-shooter, bringing Thorn+shotty or sniper, and you expect to not get hit, it is the clear choice. For me, I do better as a warlock or titan because I need the armour. I get hit a lot. I'd be very interested to know if the hunters are mostly gunslingers or bladedancers. I'd guess bladedancers - the blink jump, the crouch-triggered invisibility and the full-weasel super probably give it the edge.

  • Pretty sure all classes have the same amount of health in PVP.

  • That hasn't been my experience. The stat total level (Armor, Agility, Recovery) are evened out so a Level 1 has the same totals for the three as a level 20. But if you are level 20 and shift your perks around, it makes a difference. For example, max armor and I don't die after 2 headshots with Thorn, or 1 headshot with Black Hammer. Max agility and I get across the map faster.

  • Honestly, it doesn't make a difference mate. Don't quote me on this but I remember one of my clanmates saying Guardians have 200 health points. Agility and recovery focuses are the only ones worth using in PVP, I think armour might only reduce the flinch from being shot. It definitely doesn't give you more health (as it should).

  • Found a reddit thread and video. Looks like: * You have about 190 health, and get around 20 more from a maxed Armour stat (10%) * Your recovery at worst is around 7 seconds before regen starts. This drops by about 2 seconds with a maxed recovery stat (40%) * The difference between max and min agility is around 10% on your speed, likewise to your *first* (non-boosted) jump. No metrics though for strafing or walking while aiming. Have to say, that's less effect from Armour than I realised, but it explains some of the disagreements I have seen on if Thorn kills with 2 headshots or not. Thorn headshots do 82 damage, with another 42 points from DoT. If you max armour, you go over 206 health, and it won't kill you. If you don't, it will.

  • 7 seconds?! That sounds way too long to me?

  • I shall have to do some research. If so, it'll change the setup build for all my characters in crucible! It would also explain why Titan isn't the favoured class of the top tier gamers.

  • Gunslingers compose most of the top tier subclass for hunters, also holding the highest average KD.

  • That surprises me. The blink jump alone would have made me think bladedancer as the obvious option.

Blink shotty is high risk high reward style of play. You die a lot but you kill a lot. When I play gunslinger it's more passive, I keep distance and rack up kills, I'm killed less but I may average slightly less kills than bladedancer.

  • A lot of people have troubles using it though.

  • True (including me!) but we're discussing the top tier.

  • Good players don't use invisibility in the crucible, I doubt anyone top 100 is running around crouching all the time

  • If you say so! I'm not at that level, but now you mention it, it doesn't come up in any of the videos I've seen posted from people who are good at this game. But, I do get shotgunned in the back more than I'd like!
