There are several reasons for the tension in the in-game lore. Let me tell you a tale.
Long ago, the first guardians where the Warlocks, who studied the traveler and unlocked its secrets, and the power of light. Then came the titans, who where blessed with the light in order to defend the traveler and it's flock. But then there were the hunters; the rogues, the scavengers, the nomads, and the thieves. Now, understandably, the Warlocks were a little ticked off at this; why should these people on the fringe of society receive the same blessing as those who devoted their lives to understanding and unlocking the ways of the traveler? It was insulting, demeaning to all of their work and dedication, and a slap in the face. Warlocks feel like the mere existence of the hunters is a slight against them, and due to their very nature, Hunters don't really fit in very well with society, and bashing on warlocks gives them something of a common ground.
From those early days, the rivalry between the two has only gotten stronger. Hunters have even written an entire guide to angering warlocks.
Now, if we're talking about why there's a rivalry between them in the community, it's because class differences are one of the easier things to fight about. Everyone has one that they prefer, and when one person prefers something, they'll defend their choice and put down others choices to the bitter end because they don't want to admit that maybe, just maybe, every class has something to offer.

warlocks are just jelly cuz us Hunters didn't have to rain our whole life and just come up and own the place
-
A flaw in this, is that warlocks at one point had to have been on level with hunters, looking at the fact that they share certain abilities. Even taught them
-
It's not unreasonable to believe that these petty views aren't held by all Warlocks and Hunters. I'm a lot of them understand that, despite their differences, they're in this fight together, and that means working together and sharing knowledge.
-
That is actually a great way to look at it.
-
How else read that in the Cryptarch's voice?
-
Warlocks are the youngest class, not the oldest. Titans came first, then hunters.
-
Were exactly does it say Warlocks are the youngest? To my knowledge, the Warlocks came first, as they were the first to study the traveler. Then the Titans, and finally the hunters. I'm not saying you're wrong, but do you have a source?
-
Warlocks studied the traveler, that doesn't mean they came first. Either way though I'm sure they came before hunters
-
Based on the lore, titans are the oldest for sure. They existed even before the Tower. The only unknown is who was second. I say hunter because I'm a hunter. Heh.
-
Huh the youngest are the best
-
Not always, lol.
-
Well yes i guess it depends what your veiw is but for me they are
