You get PVE kills as a Hunter if you're around a hunter getting PVE kills. Their kills goes towards your grimoire. However, under no circumstances can you get PVP kills as a hunter while around a Hunter. You MUST be a hunter for them to go up. Trust me, I checked with numerous different friends. You would have to recreate your hunter to do it.
